Core Curriculum

We are committed to ensuring that ALL children have high aspirations and expectations of themselves, developing a life-long love of learning. We provide all of our children with the opportunity to cultivate their thinking skills; these skills are then developed so that they can apply them to the wider world context, ensuring purposeful and relevant outcomes. Teachers are facilitators and pupils are encouraged to work collaboratively, self-directing their own learning journey.

We are developing these opportunities with a range of approaches, where relevant, including Project Based Learning, Challenge Based Learning, Immersive environments, all encompassed within a creative curriculum.

English

As a core subject, all English skills are taught both discretely and across all aspects of the curriculum. We ensure that all children develop their reading and writing skills which can then support them throughout their life. We ensure that well planned curriculum coverage provides children in all Key Stages with opportunities to put their skills into practice in real-life situations and scenarios, our immersive learning environments allow this to happen naturally. We encourage all children to read and write at home with weekly year group based shared learning.

Mathematics

Mathematics is a core subject and we teach children all of the basic mathematical skills that will enable them to be confident mathematicians. All skills are taught discretely and then well-planned opportunities are provided to develop and practice these skills in a real-life context. The immersive environment helps to support this and the children become purposeful problem solvers and deeper thinkers. All mathematical work is supported with weekly shared learning, to develop and consolidate those skills taught in school.

Science

As a core subject, Science is taught in a very investigative way. Children are encouraged to involve themselves actively and practically, by challenging themselves and applying their knowledge and understanding and working scientifically. Immersive and real world applications are provided, so that children across the school can plan, predict and explain their findings, with adults facilitating the learning.

Humanities

Humanities consists of History, Geography, Religious Education and Modern Foreign Languages. At Normanby-by-Spital, we ensure that all children learn about events and people from the past, alongside a broad understanding of where we are in the world. The children develop a rich environmental and geographical understanding. This is strengthened with the deep awareness of cultural, moral and spiritual understanding of the world. All year groups, from Year 2 learn French.

Creative

We pride ourselves on providing our pupils with a rich and creative curriculum. At Normanby-by-Spital, creative learning is intrinsic to the way we learn, through drama, dance, music and art. Children explore a range of skills, celebrating, communicating and expressing themselves. Our cross-curricular approach, ensures that children broaden their awareness of other cultures. We see creativeness as a tool to channel teamwork and empathy and to be inspired by the wider world.

Technologies

At Normanby-by-Spital, we pride ourselves on providing all children with 21st Century approaches to learning. We are preparing them to be part of a world where technology is intrinsic. We understand the need to develop our pupils with the technological skills to use in their everyday and working lives.

Children also go swimming once they reach Year 2, for the whole of the Summer term.

Personal, Social, Health and Economic Education is a fundamental part of the grounding at Normanby-by-Spital. We ensure that all children have an understanding of themselves and others. They develop an awareness of who they are and how to become a positive, confident member of society.
